Eight years since my last drink, and what day one actually felt like

Nobody tells you that the hardest part isn't stopping. It's the ordinary Tuesday evening three weeks later.

Peer support, not treatment. Everything here comes from people describing what they personally lived through. Nobody is a verified therapist, doctor or mental-health professional. If you need clinical care, please also speak to a professional — see safety resources.

What I went through

A decade of drinking that looked social from the outside and was anything but by the end.

My lowest point

Lying to someone I loved about something small and realising I did it automatically.

What helped

A meeting I hated for the first month. One friend who texted at 7pm every day for a year without being asked. And logistics — planning the dangerous hours instead of white-knuckling them.

What changed

I got my mornings back first. Everything else followed the mornings.

Where I am now

Eight years, a job I'm proud of, and a life that is quieter and much more mine.

My message to anyone in it right now

If you're on day one or day zero: you don't have to want it forever. You have to get through tonight, and there are people awake right now who will sit with you while you do.
